The Purple Flag Award is a new "gold standard" that recognises great entertainment and hospitality areas at night. Places that achieve the standard will offer a positive experience to night time visitors and users and is modelled on the green flag for parks and blue flag for beaches. Halifax received its Purple Flag in November 2011 and Street Angels were a major contributor to this.
Various safeguarding documents (child protection, vulnerable adults, etc) are available on the Setting Up page - there is also the "Safe From Harm" document which along with www.safenetwork.org.uk aims to provide a one stop safeguarding information portal.
Vista Print are an on-line printing company who specialise in Business Cards and generally offer free items such as pens, t-shirts, baseball caps, post it notes, etc. Be careful about signing up to monthly bonus clubs on the payment screen. Other printers / promotional companies who offer a good deal to Street Angel type projects are PrintOut and 2020 Promotional Merchandise. We also suggest sourcing local companies as this will encourage them to get behind your project.
First Aid training is a useful background for volunteers to be aware of. West Yorkshire Health and Training carried out some First Aid training for Halifax Street Angels - the notes one of the volunteers produced are here.
A web site can be produced for free using Weebly - this web site was created using Weebly. 1&1 is a good source for cheap domain names - these can then be directed to your Weebly account or purchase a domain through Weebly. These days a Facebook page or group (not a profile) is essential and helps keep your project in the public eye through Status Updates which show on your followers Home Page. People do enjoy following groups and pages as it helps show their support for the organisation. Halifax Street Angels has almost 900 followers on Facebook including volunteers, people we help, local MP, Christians, etc. Twitter is another good way of sharing information and twitter feeds can appear on your web site ensuring that is kept fresh.
Very much part of the nighttime scene these days is the coffee shop culture. Cafe Church, mainly held in Costa Coffee, is a great initiative tapping into this.
Think When You Drink - a campaign run in West Yorkshire led by the Police with Street Angels a key partner. The campaign includes a hard hitting video (see web site), Facebook, Twitter and bluetooth safety reminder messages, and delivery of goody bags on the streets which include a safety leaflet (watch your friends, watch your drinks, use a licensed taxi at the end of the night, know where to go for help) and a spikey to go in a bottle top. When this campaign runs in West Yorkshire sexual assaults are reduced by around 40%.
Once An Addict is a classroom resource around drugs and addictions written by former drug addict turned Christian evangelist Barry Woodward.
